2016 was just the beginning...

Newcastle is preparing to take off!

With 2016 being one of our city's most progressive years in terms of gentrification, Novocastrians are strapping in for the ride of a lifetime. As a city we are stepping up onto the global stage to showcase our progress towards reinventing Newcastle's dreary coal and steel port to a buzzing, prosperous post-industrial city.

Infrastructure means connectivity including road, rail, ports and telecommunications. These directly impact economic development and growth. The railway debate has come to an end resulting in both the Light Rail and Newcastle Interchange on track for completion mid next year. With infrastructural connectivity, industries will be established as labour and capital will flow from surplus regions to connected and developing areas which ensures improvement in quality of life.

In 2016 we saw...

Infrastructural Improvements

  • Light rail underway
  • Newcastle Interchange on track
  • The near completion of the first $100m CBD University campus (3,500 students from July 2017)
  • Completion of the $100m Court House.

Boost in Tourism

  • Cruise terminal on it's way
  • Super-cars locked in for five years (imagine the shots of the Newcastle beaches, harbour and CBD beamed around the world to 250 million viewers).

Educational/Smart work opportunities

  • The Hunter Innovation Project which will provide smart technology and free WiFi throughout the CBD and enabling researchers and entrepreneurs the ability to commercialise ideas.
  • $100m CBD University campus (3,000 students from July 2017)
  • The sale of the 2 hectare Hunter Development Corporation super lot to Newcastle University for an additional 7,000 students and staff
  • The new, never-seen-before businesses locating to the West End

Development Potential

  • The sale of the Mall to Iris Capital from Sydney to develop up to 600 apartments and a high street retail mecca.
  • The sale of the very significant 21 Honeysuckle Drive site to DOMA from Canberra.
  • Completion of new apartments and fantastic new A-grade commercial space at 18 Honeysuckle Drive.
  • Record tight yields for our investment stock and interest in our assets from all over the nation.
  • Coal making a comeback and driving tenancy uptake in once vacant buildings.

Last year certainly was an outstanding year, especially for the property development industry.

"In  NSW we have achieved a 20 year objective of council amalgamations, seen the Greater Sydney Commission established, new district plans rolled out, and set the platform for regeneration of inner city Newcastle."
- Ken Morrison, Chief Executive of the Property Council Australia

The momentum is building. Stay tuned as we write Newcastle's history, together.
